What is Pilates?

Pilates is made up of 600 different exercises and variations and is a method of whole-body exercise. Although there is an emphasis on core work, core strength alone is not the end goal of Pilates, but rather using the core strength to develop functional and sustainable movement patterns throughout the body.
Joseph Pilates, born in 1883 in Germany, developed the Pilates exercise system to manage his childhood asthma and other ailments. Inspired by the Greek ideal of balance in body, mind, and spirit, he created his own exercise regime. Moving to England in 1912, Pilates worked as a self-defense instructor before being interned during World War I. It was during his internment that he refined his exercise system with fellow detainees.

What are the benefits of Pilates?

Pilates has been shown to have a positive effect on depression, stress and cognitive function, reduce lower back and menstrual pain, increase core strength, balance and posture, prevent injury, increase energy levels, mood and motivation, improve flexibility and mobility, boost immunity, enhance sports performance, strengthen bones and help improve the quality of your sleep.

The short answer is Pilates is suitable for everyone. Pilates can be tailored to a range of fitness levels, ages and abilities. However, if you have more questions on whether it is safe for you, please phone the clinic on 01462 490141 to speak with one of our clinicians.
