What is diagnostic ultrasound?
Diagnostic ultrasound is an imaging method that uses sound waves to produce images of structures within your body. The images can provide valuable information for diagnosing and directing treatment for a variety of disease and conditions.
Why have a diagnostic ultrasound?
Diagnostic ultrasound can help to see injuries, help to diagnose injuries which can help to assist in the treatment of your pain.
What can diagnostic ultrasound diagnose?
Diagnostic ultrasound can be useful for diagnosing the following:
- Shoulders; tears, tendinopathy, bursitis and frozen shoulders
- Wrists; joint inflammation, ligament and tendon problems
- Elbows; joint inflammation, ligament and tendon problems
- Hands; thumbs osteoarthritis, thumb tendinitis
- Hip; gluteal tendons, bursitis and hamstrings tears
- Knee; ligament tears, tendinopathy, muscle tears, osteoarthritis changes
- Ankle; ligament tears, tendinopathy, joint inflammation
- Foot; plantar fascia, mid-foot joints, plantar plates, big toe osteoarthritis and morton’s neuroma
Unfortunately, diagnostic ultrasound cannot be used for:
- Identifying cause of spinal pain and it cannot see this deep.
- Cartilage issues
- Suspected fractures
- Stress fractures
- Pregnancy related scans
- Identifying lumps, bumps, hernias
- Organ related issues
Who does it?
Tom runs a clinic on Thursdays offering Osteopathy, shock wave therapy and diagnostic ultrasound.

An appointment for Diagnostic ultrasound with Tom will cost £110.00 and will last 30 minutes. The appointment will include a case history, thorough assessment, scan with a written report of your scan, and most importantly advise on your next steps to recovery.
