Acupuncture and Fertility

Consider Acupuncture for fertility and for pre, during and post pregnancy.

Acupuncture can be safely used to help with conceiving by improving sperm count in men and encouraging natural balances of hormones in women.  Often people feel relaxed after Acupuncture and it is thought that the release of tension is often a major factor helping couples to conceive.

Acupuncture has been used in China for thousands of years and has played a significant part in treating pregnant women and there have been many scientific studies that have proven that Acupuncture can be used safely to help alleviate a range of conditions that may be experienced during pregnancy.

Pregnancy can be a wonderful time in a women’s life but can come with unwanted problems. These conditions can include morning sickness, pain, anxiety, depression, headaches, migraine and breech baby presentation.

Morning Sickness

Morning sickness or nausea (Hyperemesis gravidarium) and vomiting can affect a high percentage of women during the early weeks of pregnancy with some, being unfortunate  enough to experience it throughout the entire pregnancy.  Research has shown that Acupuncture can be very effective in reducing the severity and incidence of these symptoms giving welcome relief.

Musculoskeletal Pain

All sorts of pain including backache, sciatica, rib pain, hip pain and symphysis pubis pain, (pelvic pain) can occur during pregnancy. Carpal tunnel syndrome (pressure on a nerve in your wrist, causing tingling, numbness and pain in the hand and fingers) is another type of pain which commonly appears in the later stages of a pregnancy with symptoms often worse at night. Acupuncture can help to relieve pressure and reduce the swelling.

Insomnia

Insomnia can be experienced for many reasons during pregnancy – nausea on lying down, increased desire to urinate, just generally finding it difficult to find a comfy position. Women can experience a range of emotions during pregnancy which can also interfere with their sleep. Acupuncture can help to relief some of these symptoms to aid sleep.

Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety and depression can increase during pregnancy due to the extra strain that is put on the body during this time. This can be complicated by insomnia or a feeling of suffocation. Acupuncture helps lift the mind and regulate the mood. It can calm a racing heart and any feelings of stress.

 Miscarriage

Sadly, miscarriage occurs in approximately 30% of pregnancies. Acupuncture can help a women pre-conception to treat any weaknesses they may have that lead to miscarriage, particularly useful for those that may have experienced previous miscarriages.

Breech Babies

If your midwife diagnoses baby to be in breech presentation, then they may have suggested Acupuncture. Acupuncturists can help turn a breech baby ideally between 34 and 36 weeks by burning moxibustion (a herb) at points close to the little toe. Research has proven this to be an effective and safe method.

Labour Preparation

A series of treatments can be offered in the final weeks of pregnancy prior to birth. Research has shown that this can shorten labour in first time mothers by 25%. Pre-birth acupuncture treatments ensure everything is in harmony and can also help ripen the cervix, position the baby, promote optimum energy and stamina for the mother.

Induction

It can also be used to help to induce labour in overdue pregnancies. It should only be used for induction when the mother has passed her due date, and it is advisable for the mother to advise her doctor or mid-wife. This ensures that all medical factors are taken into account and that the appropriate facilities are in place if the treatment is successful in encouraging the natural process to start. Acupuncture treatment can occasionally have a very rapid effect, but generally speaking it may take at least a few days to work.

Postnatal Care

Finally, care can be given postnatally to help with conditions to include insufficient lactation, would healing and scar tissue repair, postnatal depression, mastitis (painful and inflamed breast tissue) and urinary incontinence.

Acupuncture has so much to offer and in particular to pregnancy and its related issues.

We offer free 15 minute consultations if you would like to talk to chat about Acupuncture before commencing treatment or you could have a telephone chat with one of our Acupuncture team.
